I'm curious what the situation was with Doug McElvein and WHAS, from the clips on the site. The history shows that he took over the 9-12spot for Milton Metz with his own deal. Joe Elliott also took the show in '93 and Doug went to KMOX in St. Louis (currently in mornings as I heard him the other day) I'm just cloudy on weather Doug got an offer from KMOX after hitting the nightwaves or something. He has a great voice and is very well spoken. I'd like to hear him in call in style show. I never did as i was a bit young to care about the talk aspect of radio back then. thanks

I was in the St Louis area last spring and heard Doug's voice in a commercial. Didn't get a chance to listen much as I was passing through. I think he's still there - a check of KMOX's web site should tell.
If I am not mistaken, in the 70's his air name was Mark Elton.

yes he is still at KMOX, I have listened to him on and off this past couple weeks reception permitting. I was just curious what was his departure from WHAS was about, he took over Metz show but within Months it went full time to Joe Elliott. I didn't know if there was an issue, or KMOX heard him and made a nice offer.

Rush Limbaugh may have had something to do with Doug's departure. Rush was originally on 790, before WHAS. Someone who knows the timeline could see if Doug's leaving was around the same time Rush moved to WHAS.

That sounds right. I remember being in college in 1991 and 1992 when WHAS was still a good station with Wayne Perkey, Jack Fox, Doug McElvein, Terry Miners, Van Vance, Milton Metz and of course Joe Donovan. When I would go to lunch I usually listened to Doug as he had the Noon to 3:00pm shift. I listened to WHAS a lot back then...unlike now.

well if you listen to Milton Metz' last show, which is July 1993, it's advertising Doug as the replacement. They already are talking about Rush being on during the day. (12-3) and when you look at KMOX site, they list Doug as being there since..(it's escaped me at the moment) i believe 93. he'd been at WHAS for about 13 years. I'd say this was the highest point. And then..boom..leave. interesting to me for some reason..haha

Hey all,
WHAS management made the decision to add Rush Limbaugh to the lineup in 1993.
About the same time Milton Metz decided to pull back from doing a nightly show.
Then P.D. Skip Essick approached me about moving from middays to El Metzo's time slot.
It was, to say the least, quite an honor to be asked.
Shortly after making that shift to nights my wife and I were visiting friends in St. Louis. I gate crashed at KMOX, met then P.D. Tom Langmyer and struck up a relationship with him that ended up with CBS tendering me an offer to do afternoon drive.
I accepted started August 31 of 1993. In 1998 I made the switch to morning drive.
Moving to a new city is always tough but after 16 years St. Louis is our home.
We do get back to Louisville on a fairly regular basis and yes, I do listen to WHAS on occasion, usually while driving in to work here in Missouri.
Best,
Dbm

Doug, thanks for your reply, you are on my facebook but didn't want to bother you with the old questions as I know you are a busy morning man! I appreciate your answer very much. Best of luck to you and God Bless.

I know there were a few callers to Doug's show that were just spoiling for a fight with him. I never understood that. Most of them came off like dimwits.
