LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Phyllis Knight Gifford, the first full-time executive director and producer of the WHAS Crusade for Children, is dead at the age of 81.
The veteran Louisville radio and television personality, who was known to her audience as Phyllis Knight, died Monday in Louisville after a brief illness.
She was one of the first female broadcasters in Louisville and became Kentucky’s highest-ranking newswoman as a television reporter in the 1970s. She received several honors, including two McCall’s Golden Mike Awards, according to The Courier-Journal.
Knight retired in 1981 after 26 years with WHAS-TV and Radio.
Her funeral is scheduled for Thursday in Louisville, according to Pearson Funeral Home.
