Wow! Just saw a post from Max on this site and learned that Future-Bob is still on the air in Louisville. Some years back he was program director for "the Fox" but then I lost track of him.
When I met FB, he was like 19 and had come over to QMF from ZZX in January of '81. C.C. Mathews was program director during QMF's startup. He felt that even though FB was young, and not all that experienced, he sounded pretty good and would be a great asset to the station's air staff. He was right. Future-Bob had more energy than the entire staff, put together, and ran a very tight board. Aside from Ron Clay & Terry Meiners, Future-Bob was one of QMF's most well known jocks. It makes sense that he still goes by that name to this day.
I'm not going to mention FB's real name here, but he did not go by the name of Future-Bob until about his third month on QMF. The story has always been a bit fuzzy to me, but as I understand it, he was given that name by Duke Meyer, who did middays on QMF for years and is currently at WFPK. Duke had this thing about attaching "Bob" to the end of nearly everyone's name at QMF. It was like a bad episode of The Walton's where everyone was a Duke-Bob, C.C.-Bob, Russ-Bob, etc. When it came to FB (who was only 19 or 20 at the time) Duke made some sort of remark that FB was not yet old enough to be a Bob, but that he would be a Bob in the future. A future Bob, if you will. I don't know why FB took to using the name on the air because, as I understand it, Duke did the "Bob" names off the air as an inside joke, not on the air. But I may be wrong.
Many years have passed and the once 19 year old FB is now around 46 years of age. The future has arrived and he is officially a "Bob" after all.
"Helloooo. We're glad you made it. Welcome to the FUTURE!!"
That's my understanding of the origin of FB's name. Duke Meyer or Future-Bob, himself, may offer a clarification if either one becomes aware of this writing.
I'm Travis-Bob, signing off.
(Future-Bob can currently be heard on 107.7 SFR; Duke Meyer can be heard on 91.9 WFPK; and Travis can be heard breaking dishes at a Florida Denny's)
