I really enjoyed listening to the 1994 lunchtime conversation which took place between Ray Shelton, Milton Metz, Randy Atcher, Bob Lawson and Tom "Cactus" Brooks. Their stories of the old days are a reminder of how things have, or have not, changed in broadcasting.
"I'm LIVE on the air hosting a 90 minute telephone call-in talk show, but the phone lines are not working. I call the engineer and he tells me that he will take care of it FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!!! ARRGGGH!!"
That's not an exact quote, but if you have been, or are, in broadcasting, it's sure to give you that feeling of "been there, done that."
Tom "Cactus" Brooks sounds terribly old on this recording (because he was) and would leave us just 3 years later in 1997. His hearing was not that good and it made for some really funny moments during the lunch. I never saw Brooks outside of his Cactus character, but he's been described as having been a rather handsome and distinguished looking man, even in his 80s.
Since that lunch in 1994, we also lost Randy Atcher (2002). I believe Ray Shelton and Milton Metz are still with us, but can't be sure of Bob Lawson. Still, if you get the chance, give a listen to that lunchtime conversation from 1994.
