The Dick Wagner aircheck from 1968 was too cool! I didn't expect it to be country music. So it seems that the switch to country was made in early 1968. This is probably the earliest aircheck in existence of WINN as a country station. And it also reveals that Dickie Braun was part of the first country airstaff there.
If you look at the back of the 1967 WINN (pre-country) survey on this site, you will see a picture of Dick Wagner. This was the air name Dick Braun used on WSAI in Cincinnati to prevent being confused with Bob Braun. (Interestingly enough, Bucks Braun is Bob Braun's nephew! ) I didn't realize that WINN was Dick Braun's first stop in Louisville. I had always thought that he started in Louisville at WKLO. (Braun's WKLO stuff is great! The commercials are a scream--especially the tricycle race!) What is really neat is that you can fast forward twenty years to 1988 or 1990, and Dickie had the same delivery and sense of humor. It may not be commonly known that Dick Braun made a brief comeback in 1998-99 on WYBL 93.1 ("The Bull"), playing country oldies. It was probably voice-tracked, but the delivery and humor were still there.
As Bill Bailey so elequently put it, "The little guy over at WINN, Mr. Dickie Braun, is ... about as good as they come in this town."
