Clear channel seems to have given up on two of it's former star stations. WQMF and WTFX are just about done. Clear channel moved Mel (who had been on QMF for exactly 17 years). They eliminated the request lunch hour. The removed half of their playlist. No hair bands, no deep cuts, nothing that requires any imagination. ( I never understood why classic rocks stations only played the same 200 songs. Shouldn't the library continually grow as songs get older?? Will they be playing the same playlist 15 years from now??) They use WFBQ's broadcast in the evenings and weekends. If that isn't stripping a once great station down to the bare bones, I don't know what is. WTFX recently switched to top 40 new alternative rock. Gone are bands like GNR, Led Zepplin, Ozzy and they are replaced with Aberlin, the Used, and Paramore. This may work with LRS gone and no other competition. But they eliminated all local DJ's and similarly to WQMF, they use another clear channel's station and on air out of Columbus.

Well WLUE dropped it's format yesterday at 5pm..it was hyped all wek "something new is happening on this frequency at 5pm, Thursday" I suspected a format change even thought I was under the impression the station was doing well.. but noticed no DJ's, and Saturday, Mark Stahr said "See ya next week!" Sure enough, it went to some weird Generation X format, and I turned the station. I wanna hear 80's music so I think 106.9 is the best bet now? (OUCH) turned QMF on today and heard a Twisted Sister song but otherwise haven't tuned them in much. I hope they didn't fire everyone on LouieFM..wow. But radio is quickly declining. I listen to Terry on WHAS in it's watered down form, WGTK seems very refreshing on the weekends with the music on Saturday nights, and Dr. Stan Sunday nights (used to be on WHAS) was listening to WLUE but I guess thats over. Good thing we have this site and I do routine checks to locate any old Joe Donovan material. I have gone as far as putting it all on my ipod for a listen when the moment is right.

Yeah just noticed that WLUE is no more. Here is a suggestion: WQMF and SFR are playing nearly the identical playlist. Go to www.yes.com for proof . WQMF plays a few 90's songs by STP, RHCPeppers, Nirvana, Metallica, and U2, but besides those 15 or 20 songs it exactly the same. I think now would be a great time for WQMF to expand its playlist. The should add the rock songs that WLUE used to play to it's playlist. Bands that WQMF used to play in its heyday when it was a real AOR station. Bands like INXS, Huey Lewis, Poison, Slaughter, to name a few. Play more songs from artists that are already on the playlist: Don Henley, Steve Winwood, Billy Joel. Then add the newer rocks songs that were to new for WQMF but to soft for WTFX: Dave Mathews, Blues Traveler, Goo Goo Dolls, etc. I doubt clear channel would ever have a station that would appeal to more than one age group again, but they better try something because Louisville's ( and everywhere else's) radio is dying.

I never did a research paper on it but for the most part, QMF was the better station, alot heavier playlist, deep cuts..stuff in some cases I never have heard. WSFR on the other hand has played that short list for over 10 years now.. And I'm wondering how they stay afloat? Most of those Cox run stations play short lists, look at WRKA when it was oldies..current WAKY out them out of business. But when I ask most people which classic rock station they listen to; "107.7"
I honestly wish Clear Channel would just move into something else and sell the radio stations off. They are destroying it. I would like to see CBS..maybe anyone besides Clear Channel own WHAS. I'm not normally for government involvement in everything but I think there was a great quality of radio just by setting the rules that were regulation pre-1996.

I really love the new generation x radio i hated louie same old burnt out songs. Gen x goes pretty deep. They hired someone from xm to program it i wish it well.Louie was poorly programmed!!!Just like 103.9 was a poorly programmed 80s.
Now clear channel or should i say bain capital have ruined kiss and the fox it is all piped in from there premium choice service!!!These hedge funds have just neutered radio but kiss is not local anymore neither is the fox and the fox had some of there best numbers ever since they have been on the air go figure.

I can understand tired to a degree, but if that is true why is SFR still around? the ABSOLUTE most tired classic rock songs ever. 103.9 when it was 80's had decent selection. I thought I would have added about 20 more songs. I recall when WRVI was an 80's station, "totally 80's" I really liked that one..then they went under and played the same 10 songs on a loop for about 4 weeks straight before it swapped to Christian. How does one program a station like these and "work"?

Adam scuse me but 103.9 the point was a very very very very very very poorly programmed 80s station no variety t speak of the same 10 songs over and over how about play yaz don't go from that decade instead of melt w you for the millionth billionth time i know they test well does not mean they r the only tunes to play but i am baffled y u say 103.9 was a good 80s station now the new gen x radio does play a decent variety.

Well I never said it was the best, it was alright, but what do we have currently playing 80's? WVEZ with its softer side now and then and I guess 100.5 plays a few. Like I said, I would have added more songs.
But when you talk to a lot of people about programming, they've told me that to much variety tanks your ratings,..Which it wouldn't with me. But Maybe they are just to lazy to look at a hit chart from years ago and see what else existed.

I have heard that also more variety less ratings blah blah blah depends on the market i think it is sad but i think louisvillians do not embrace new music they will listen but not care for it for they would rather listen to melt w you for the millionth time then hear say dr jeckyl and mr hyde from men at work which was a lesser known song by them but still charted and i also hear alternative is not a viable format here and is a very hard sell for the sales staff and it only works in bigger markets well columbus ohio is number 38 and they have had cd 101 for years w average numbers and they are still around.
The point would not even play just like heaven???
But to your 80s question i think that format has died i think.

You maybe right, people are tired of it. But I'm still curious how people can stand 107.7 for years now playing the same rotation of Boston, Kansas, stones..and on and on and think it's "mixing it up" lol

I think it is more the mindset of louisville they would rather here freebird for the millionth time then say hotdog by zepplin a lessser known song. For some reason this town likes its tried and true and will not embrace much else but in this cities defense alot of classic rock stations in this country all pull from the same pond but i think this town is worse then most and it is sad. I do not care much for the classic rock format but if they would play 2nd and 3rd tier hits from classic rock it would be worth listening to occasionally it is not fair.
Louie was god awful for that reason the same songs over and over that is what makes gen x 100.5 pretty god they will play a variety and dig a bit for songs.

Maybe someone fromWQMF has been reading this board. Last week they actually ADDED songs. Songs I have noticed: "because the night" Patty Smyth Group "don't you forget about me" Simple Minds several from the Romones two REM songs "i melt with you" Modern English several simon and garunkel songs a couple Don henley songs I hope this is a sign of things to come. This is a great start, I hope they keep adding more and more.
