The PD at WLRS, Joe, is someone I had gotten to know pretty well over the last few months. He and I have exchanged phone calls and e-mails, etc. so imagine my surprise when an e-mail I had sent him today got kicked back at me.
I call the station to find out that he's no longer there....in fact they have NO air staff, I'm told and they have gone to automation.
Anyone got the straight dope on this???

Gotta admit that I love the current incarnation of WLRS (even if its not on 102.3), and hate hearing there are no longer any jocks at LRS. I thought Skinny Jay and Big Joe were very good and then Rocky Knight came aboard and that was a bonus. I wondered what had happened to the jocks. I guess I should be relieved, as I was worried that there might be a format change at 105.1.

I'm sure LRS's current format's days are numbered. No DJ's on the air tells me that the writing is on the wall, and it's sad, I love their current format.

Clear Channel changes formats. Remember their jazz format? SHE-FM? The Bull? The many incarnations of 790 and 1080? Conversely, how many formats have we gotten used to over the years that are still with us? DJX since the early 80s QMF since the early 80s GZB since it went on the air... 1990? VEZ since 1988 SFR since 1997 MJM? AMZ HAS So eight of the top 10-12 stations haven't significantly changed formats in over 10 years. And they aren't all owned by Clear Channel.

I went to the WLRS website to see if the "Old School" pics that I had submitted were still posted under the Locals Only tab....they were. Checking the "Jocks" tab, however, produced a blank page. Sad......Having been part of the early days at WLRS, I sure hope it survives. My years at WLRS are very dear to me...so I hope they don't blow it.

Wlrs died in 1999 when they did away when they flipped 102 to love and then max but cmon for all intensive purposes lrs is dead 105 don't count at all it is not the real lrs. it died a long time ago.It is lrs in name only so i totally disagree with you kill the calls once and for all hopefully soon and let lrs 102 be remembered for the greatness it once was not for what the suits have done to it over the past decade which is criminal.
Wonde what the new format will be on 105.1 and when???
And please get some real talent for the station that was part of the problem you guys let people like joe whom had no business as aradio dj on the station he had poor prununciation poor annunciation no professional manner whatsoever.
If i had been alive back then and worked at lrs i would be embarrased by what it has become today

Im gonna be honest, I was never big on the alternative rock format, not saying it's bad music, I just like some classic rock thrown in there. Unfortunately 105.1 is dropping the ball on the "Everything that rocks" format, and it's sad. As far as a new format, they had a window where they could have taken a shot at oldies, but another station is giving it a try.

Hi rjc merry christmas to you. The everything that rocks format isn't doing that well anywhere not just here in louisville.
I love the alt format unfortunately wlrs had not been alt for many years prior to the everything that rocks format. They were very fox lite.I blame radio one for runing wlrs. Mainline was handed a bad situation with wlrs and has to deal with it. It is just to bad everyone with mainline is losing there job.
Radio one just gave up on lrs a few years ago and had very bad consultants that were clueless about the alt format.
But why they wasted that 104.3 frequency with a simulcast of wlrs was beyond me.It was bad enough wlrs was on 105.1 never mind 104.3 a very stupid decision one of the dumbest ever!!!

Having been away from Louisville for many years, I can't second-guess or debate any of the critique I read here. Still I'd be sad to hear that the call letters WLRS should cease to exist. As I said earlier. I was part of the very early history of WLRS and hope to know that, at least the call sign survives. I know the station has changed in just about every was: Operating location, frequency, air staff, management, etc., Still the call sign endures as a local icon....WLRS...so, I hope it continues to do so regardless of any slings and arrows directed at it.
Regards and Happy Holidays

At the time though, 105.1 was going head to head with WTFX.... on 100.5!104.3 covers all of northeastern Jefferson county very well, which 105.1 doesn't do worth a darn. It covers several other places which the 105.1 signal lacks also. So it really kinda did make some sense when they put LRS on both frequencies. They needed the additional coverage.

I was impressed with the "coverage" related discussion. One of the smart things that has happened in Dallas-Ft. Worth, or the "Metroplex" as it is called is that several years ago, most of the major broadcasters, both radio and TV got together and built a common transmitter facility at a point halfway between Dallas and Ft. Worth on a little hilly area called Cedar Hill. It is the most prominent area of higher than average height in the North Texas community of cities. They built three towers on the site, the tallest of which, if memory serves is appx 1800 ft high. Except for the local PBS affiliate, all the commercial TV and FM (it's irrelevant, of course to AM) stations broadcast from this complex. It's GREAT, since the altitude provides maximum coverage to all who broadcast from the site, and those receiving over the air TV can use a single directional setting for their receiving antennae. They jointly fund a crew of maintenance engineers and other personnel, as required.
Other large metro areas have done the same. Any thought of the broadcasters in the Louisville market considering such a move?

Hi rjc merry christmas to you. The everything that rocks format isn't doing that well anywhere not just here in louisville. I hate to hear that, cause I love the "everything that rocks" format. But I guess everyones attention span is pretty short nowadays, and thats way too much music to take in. Me I love music, so it works for me.

Regards and Happy Holidays Dan No doubt, the letters WLRS belong right up there with WAKY, WKLO and even WHAS as radio icons. And some radio company will eventually give "LRS" the respect it deserves. Look at what 103.5 did with WAKY, that has to be the most brilliant move in Louisville radio history (thats my opinion at least)!
