This wasn't on a Lexington or Louisville station, but one that has long been a part of broadcasting in Kentucky - WCTT 680 AM in Corbin. It happened many years ago, but I have always remembered it. I wonder if anyone who sees this has ever been with that station.
On August 25, 1963, I was in a car with two other guys traveling to the Smokey Mountains. In going into Corbin, I had the radio on WCTT who was carrying the Reds-Giants game from San Francisco. The station was a member of the Burger Beer Baseball Network that carried the Reds' games. Cincinnati trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning but had the bases loaded with two out. Frank Robinson was the batter, but suddenly the coverage was interupted and an announcer on WCTT advised there was a fire in a local lumberyard and they were switching to a person who was at the scene. There was then a man speaking via the telephone who described what was taking place at the fire scene. When he finished, the announcer back at the studio returned to the Reds game just as it was being advised how many career grandslams Robinson had now hit. It became quickly evident that the Cincinnati slugger had just hit a grandslam giving the Reds an 8-5 lead. Cincinnati wound up winning that game 8-7. As a Reds fan with many years involved in radio, whenever I think of Corbin, Ky. I remember WCTT and the time that they missed a Reds grandslam in covering a news event on a Sunday afternoon.
